An article about “fake” Duchamp Fountain editions. It’s remarkable how the issues of authenticity and authorship Duchamp raised can remain this heated nearly a hundred years after the fact. Bravo, Marcel!

—Jill Sterrett, Director of Collections and Conservation, SFMOMA, commenting on shifts in responsibility and input in the field of museum conservation at a time when a growing amount of work is created and preserved in a digital format. She created a cross-departmental group called “Team Media” at SFMOMA that advises on conservation practices for film and digital media. Sterrett’s lecture was part of Collaborations in Conserving Time-Based Art at the Smithsonian on March, 18, 2010.

“Creative Capital is reinventing philanthropy for the arts. In addition to its focus on careers rather than projects, the group differs from others in the way it finances its grants. It uses both money from donations and a share of the profits from the artists’ main work over the grant periods. That share is proportional to the grant’s importance. If the grant covered 5% of the costs, for example, Creative Capital would get 5% of the profits. “If we stand to benefit, then we are going to be working our tails off to make that project succeed,” Lerner says.”
